Zooming Out

When we are wrapped up in our individual issues and are unable to zoom out, we end up making decisions that are not in our best interest and are egotistical. There is something to the idea of “zooming out” or “stepping in someone else’s shoes” that changes the way we approach life.

Here To Get It Right

Have you ever heard of the Cavendish banana? If not, it’s because they’re the only type sold so we just call them…bananas. The vast majority of internationally traded bananas are genetic clones. The yellow bananas you can buy at the Safeway on Pearl Street and the ones in the banana cream pie at the HEB in Abilene and the one Carol in Rhode Island bought for her lunch at an Aldi are genetically EXACTLY the same banana. You might spend a second comparing prices on honey crisps or pink ladies, but bananas are just bananas.

The Extroverted Introvert

It may surprise people to know that I’m actually an introvert. I was painfully shy until I was about 16. I still have crippling stage fright. Yes, ME. The thing Tina says to me most often when we’re home together is “Could you please speak up?” I’m not joking.

Good Friday: Sorrow For Now

There is something powerful about letting a sad thing be sad. We struggle in Western Evangelical Christianity with this concept. Or something that comes along to confirm your greatest fears, not alleviate them.

Living in Hope

This group of women stood at a distance and watched as Jesus died. Did they feel as though all hope was lost when they heard him say "It is finished"?

Buried

It is their decision to bury Jesus and the act of doing so declares their absolute faith in Him and love for him. The change is seen in their willingness to put their reputations on the line, to be associated with the known “blasphemer”, Jesus of Nazareth.

Palm Sunday: The Worthiness of Jesus

What is the significance of Palm Sunday? This event gets but a dozen or so verses in scripture, less than many of our other favorite accounts of his life and ministry. If we celebrate Palm Sunday, then why not Feeding the Five Thousand Friday, or Jesus Walks on Water Wednesday?

Before and After

Under the threat of persecution, they’ll share in hushed tones in the quiet of night. With boldness and bravery, they’ll stand in open defiance of those in authority that would hope to quiet the revealed Kingdom of God. These are the sparks that light the flame of the Church.

Moving Into the Middle

Everything changes when you move from the edges into the middle. As an introvert who still carries a bit of the shy little girl I was, I am all about the edges. Loner tendencies linger hard in me, and I’m much more comfortable on the edges.
